PHILOSOPHY: Cumorah Academy strives to maintain an atmosphere in school and school related activities, which enhances the potential for success of every member of the Cumorah Academy community. Cumorah Academy’s commitment to learning includes the concept that, in order to learn, students must be guaranteed an environment that is safe. They must also have classrooms where mutual respect is the underlying principle and where rules are publicized, explained and enforced. The school’s rules are derived from the goals of respect for others property, and for others. In enforcing the rules of the school, Cumorah Academy believes that all students must understand that their actions do have consequences. As students become responsible for appropriate behavior, they develop the self-discipline needed for good citizenship. To ensure the success of students in a school environment; teachers, administrators, and parents must work cooperatively. Teachers, staff members, and administrators will be responsible for modeling and teaching the behavior standards desired in the classroom and in the school. Parent support is essential to the school staffs’ efforts to ensure that the students respect and follow the rules and regulations of the school. Students are responsible for appropriate behavior, regular school attendance, and continued striving for academic excellence. Parents are expected to take an active role in supporting the academic, attendance, and discipline policies of the school and individual teachers. Homework is an integral part of the school program. Students will have homework on a regular basis. Parents are expected to monitor and supervise the child’s homework assignment. Parent’s are also asked to read the school newsletters, and any other memos or bulletins sent home from the school. Valuable information regarding events, progress reports, and report cards are announced in school newsletters, memos and bulletins sent home. CHECK-UP/MISSING ASSIGNMENT SHEETS (PINK): Students who are absent, or who have not turned in work on time, will be given a Missing Assignment Sheet. This sheet will have the students name, the date the missing assignment was given, a list of the missing assignments, and the signature of both the student and teacher. For student absences, a return date for the make-up work will be given on the Missing Assignment Sheet. Parents must sign the Missing assignment Sheet to show they are aware of it, and students must return the sheet back to the teacher the following day. Missing assignment Sheets are also used for students who have been asked to re-do any assignments for credit. ** In the Elementary school any work turned in late will only be given late credit. In the Middle school any work turned in late will be given 0 credit.** BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION : The Cumorah Academy Staff has adopted the Love and Logic approach to school discipline. Each student is a unique individual with unique personal, social and educational needs. As a result, every disciplinary situation becomes unique in nature. Consequences for misbehavior provide the best learning value when matched to the unique students and the unique situation. Cumorah Academy believes that the odds for students learning from their mistakes increases dramatically when students see a reasonable connection between their behavior and the resulting consequences. Cumorah Academy dedicates itself to following a set of core beliefs that provide a guide for dealing with student discipline. These core beliefs guide our attempts to individualize disciplinary procedures and to help students see reasonable connections between their behavior and the resulting consequences. Individual Classroom Rules will be based on the Love and Logic Core Beliefs. The following list of core beliefs outlines the professional actions and attitudes of all staff members at Cumorah Academy; Every attempt will be made to maintain the self-respect of both the student and the teacher. Students will be guided and expected to solve their problems, or the ones they create, without creating problems for anyone else. Students will be given opportunities to make decisions and live with the consequences, whether good or bad. Misbehavior will be handled with natural or logical consequences instead of punishment, whenever possible. Misbehavior will be viewed as an opportunity for individual problem solving and preparation for the real world as opposed to a personal attack on school or staff. Students are encouraged to request a "due process" hearing whenever consequences appear to be unfair. School problems will be handled by school personnel. Criminal activity will be referred to the proper authorities. EXPULSION: If a student intentionally harms another student in any way, he/she will be subject to immediate suspension and/or expulsion.
